At this point, Mic.Drop project is tied to the MGP juice. It may change in the future, but given how well first two releases were received the decision was made to not fix what’s not broken. Folks behind the project narrowed it down to 4-year, 36% rye samples to see if anything would be of interest. Some tasted consistently richer and more mature than others. Knowing that the location was not at play, differences between batches could be a factor. This is unlikely as the process is streamlined and MGP knows what they are doing – they know consistency. MGP uses different coopers and the 4-year, 36% rye samples that shined were systematically aged in casks produced by Zak Cooperage.
They then narrowed down the batched exclusively aged in casks from this specific cooper. 37 of the casks of the same batch (12E23-E05) were all that was left. After tasting this specific run, guys were impressed by the profile, the liveliness, fruit expression, and elegance on the palate despite being 56% ABV. Those remaining casks were bought and shipped to Strong Spirits where they were blended and bottled at full proof without the addition of any water.
