We went into this tasting not knowing what to expect. We tasted FEW Bourbon quite a long time ago and found it quite rough around the edges. But we believed it was worth revisiting and wanted to see what the single barrels had to offer. Boy, are we glad we did! Aged in 15-gallon barrels for at least 3 years, all three samples offered a fairly robust flavor profile.
However, the one we liked the most offered quite a bit more oomph than the others, drinking with more intensity than its 101 proof would suggest. An interesting cinnamon – rye – bananas flavor popped on the palate, with a surge of spice and a relatively long finish. Similar to some other smaller barrel bourbons we’ve tasted recently, there was just something about the barrel that was interesting and different but not too far off the traditional spectrum. While we had gone into the sampling hesitant about the barrels, we left pleasantly surprised.
