The Clynelish 1996 Prima & Ultima 26 Years Old represents a unique and experimental approach from the revered Highland distillery. Curated by master blender Dr. Emma Walker, this edition is part of the Prima & Ultima range, showcasing some of the rarest whiskies in the world. This particular Clynelish comprises two experimental casks filled in 1996, both European oak butts, one seasoned with oloroso sherry and the other with sweeter Pedro Ximénez sherry. This combination has brought a rich sweetness and darker character to the Clynelish profile, enhancing its crisp charm. A limited edition with only 889 bottles available, this whisky is a tribute to innovation and a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts.
TASTING NOTES
Nose: Mellow and drying, with a light tingling. Initial notes are faintly medicinal and mossy, with hints of grapefruit and a light oiliness. Underneath, there’s a sweet suggestion of toffee and a faint hint of fragrant smoke. Adding water intensifies the toffee notes and brings a balsa wood character.
Palate: The texture is smoothly oily and lightly waxy. It starts surprisingly sweet, with apple-fruity notes, then quickly becomes very drying and chilli-pepper spicy. It resembles a toffee apple with burnt edges. Water accentuates the sweetness and tempers the spiciness.
Finish: Good length, spicy kick and a mouth-cooling, warming Szechuan pepper-spice aftertaste. Sweeter and saltier with a drop of water, with reduced spiciness.
